Dr. Bob Swarthout is an Associate Professor with joint appointments in the Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences and Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at Appalachian State University, where he also serves as Director of the Environmental Sciences program. He holds a Ph.D. in Earth Systems Science from the University of New Hampshire, an M.S. in Environmental Studies from the College of Charleston, and a B.S. in Chemistry and Biology from SUNY Cortland.
His research focuses on analytical environmental chemistry, investigating organic pollutants' impacts on air/water quality and climate. Key projects include:
- Measuring volatile organic compounds at AppalAIR Observatory to study plant-climate interactions
- Analyzing oil spill weathering effects on environmental persistence and toxicity
- Developing advanced instrumentation for atmospheric speciation (e.g., NSF-funded Aerosol Chemical Speciation System)
Publication analysis (2018-2025) reveals dominant themes:
- Atmospheric chemistry (35% of recent work) with focus on VOC measurements and aerosol properties
- Oil pollution studies (40%) including transport mechanisms, spill forensics, and ecosystem impacts
- Interdisciplinary approaches (25%) spanning environmental education, public health, and analytical method development
As Research Mentor and program director, he trains students in analytical techniques and scientific communication through AppalAIR Observatory projects. He maintains active collaborations with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on oil spill research.
