Bo Carlsson is Professor of Sociology of Law and Sport Science at the Department of Sport Sciences, Linnæus University in Växjö, Sweden. His academic work bridges legal studies, sociology, and sports science, focusing on the complex relationship between legal frameworks and sporting practices within Nordic contexts.
Professor Carlsson's research interests encompass the legal culture of sport, the juridification of sport and its self-regulation, the changing landscape of sports, and sportification processes. His work examines how traditional sporting practices are transformed through commercialization, globalization, and legal frameworks, with particular attention to ice hockey as a cultural phenomenon. He investigates the tension between American sporting models and Nordic traditions, analyzing resistance to hegemonic influences in sports organizations and policies.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals consistent themes across multiple disciplines including sports sociology, legal studies, and cultural analysis. A distinctive trend in his scholarship is the examination of how non-sporting practices become sportified, as seen in his work on timber sports and science slams. His comparative approach highlights differences between European and American sports models, particularly regarding governance structures and commercialization processes.
Professor Carlsson is currently engaged in significant research projects including 'Football vs. Ice Hockey in the European Sports Landscape,' 'Professionalization of Sports Coaching from a Scandinavian Horizon,' and 'Outsiders, Underdogs and Bohemians in Sport,' demonstrating his continued contribution to understanding the evolving dynamics of sports in contemporary society.
