Dr. Blake Buchan is a Professor in the Department of Pathology at the Medical College of Wisconsin and serves as Director of Clinical Microbiology, Serology, and Molecular Infectious Disease at Children’s Wisconsin. He leads education for Pathology Residents, Infectious Disease Fellows, and medical students in clinical microbiology and molecular diagnostics. His roles include overseeing the clinical microbiology laboratory, providing clinician consultations, and contributing to hospital committees like Infection Prevention and Antimicrobial Stewardship. Dr. Buchan’s research focuses on molecular diagnostics, MALDI-TOF applications, and novel diagnostic assays for bacterial, viral, and fungal pathogens. He has led numerous clinical trials and published extensively on topics like antimicrobial resistance, PCR-based diagnostics, and SARS-CoV-2 variants.
Education: PhD in Microbiology from the University of Iowa (2009), Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Microbiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (2009–2011), and BS in Microbiology from the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh (2002).
Research interests span molecular diagnostics, clinical microbiology laboratory practices, and emerging pathogens. His recent work emphasizes improving diagnostic accuracy for tick-borne infections, optimizing antimicrobial stewardship, and analyzing SARS-CoV-2 cycle thresholds’ clinical implications. Dr. Buchan’s articles highlight innovations in PCR-based assays, blood culture systems, and infection control strategies.
