Dr. Blair Biggar is a Lecturer and Research Associate in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Glasgow, with an affiliation to the School of Health & Wellbeing. He holds roles in interdisciplinary research addressing gambling, health, and social inequalities, particularly focusing on gender dynamics. His affiliations include the Glasgow’s Social Scientists in Health Group, Gambling Research Glasgow, and the Migration and Mobilities research group.
Blair completed his PhD in Central and Eastern European Studies (2022) on EU Roma migrants' lived citizenship experiences in Scotland. His teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate courses in sociology, including Substantive Topics in the Sociology of Consumption and Sociology of Addiction. He has also delivered guest lectures at Justus Liebig University and the University of Glasgow.
His research focuses on gambling studies, citizenship, migration, and qualitative methodologies. Notable projects include the Football Fans and Betting (FFAB) initiative, the Lancet Public Health Commission on Gambling, and developing respectful reporting guidelines for gambling coverage. His peer-reviewed work combines ethnography with policy analysis, addressing topics like gambling harm among military personnel and esports sponsorship strategies.
Blair has received grants including the SPS Investigator Fellowship (2024) and ESRC funding (2019, 2016–2020). His publications span peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Journal of Public Health), book chapters, and policy reports. He actively engages in media discussions on gambling and migration via BBC and Guardian platforms, and serves as a peer reviewer for academic journals and funding bodies.
