Björn Philips is a Professor at Stockholm University, affiliated with the Department of Psychology. He leads the Stockholm University research group for Process and Outcome in Psychodynamic therapies (SU-POP) and has held academic roles at Linköping University as Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor (2011–2016). His work spans psychodynamic therapy research, internet-delivered interventions, and clinical applications for adolescent depression and substance use disorders.
His research focuses on psychodynamic therapy in various formats, including internet-delivered psychodynamic therapy (IPDT), mentalization-based therapy, and relational psychotherapy. He investigates mechanisms of change such as therapeutic alliance, emotion regulation, and negative effects in psychotherapy. Projects like ERiCA (funded by the Kavli Trust) test IPDT for adolescents, while collaborations with Northern Stockholm Psychiatry explore Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP-G) for complex psychiatric cases.
The 15 most recent articles highlight his emphasis on internet-based psychodynamic interventions for adolescents, transdiagnostic treatment comparisons (Unified Protocol vs. Affect Phobia Therapy), and therapeutic alliance dynamics in digital settings. These studies address adolescent mental health, telepsychotherapy challenges, and mechanisms of emotion regulation in treatment outcomes.
He has supervised multiple PhD students, including Karin Lindqvist (2023), Jakob Mechler (2023), and Carl-Johan Uckelstam (2021). His grants include 5.7 million SEK from the Kavli Trust (2019–2023) for the ERiCA project.
