Björn Mitzinneck is an Associate Professor and PhD Coordinator in the Department of Innovation Management & Strategy at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Economics and Business. He oversees the faculty's PhD program supporting ~180 candidates and is a 2024 member of the Young Academy Groningen. His research focuses on sustainability transitions in critical sectors like energy and food systems, exploring organizational innovation in both startups and established firms. He holds a PhD from Cornell University and an MPhil from Cambridge University.
Research expertise includes business sustainability strategies, strategic change processes, and organization design. His work aligns with the faculty’s priorities on energy transitions and future sustainability. Notable projects include a NWO VENI grant-funded study on collaboration models for energy transition and trans-Atlantic research on scaling social innovation. Teaching responsibilities include courses on sustainability strategies, organization theory, and energy transition innovation.
Key achievements include publishing in top journals like Journal of Business Venturing and Strategy Science, co-editing the 2020 volume Organizational Hybridity, and contributing expert commentary on research funding. He advises on balancing value tensions in social ventures and has explored reputation repair post-environmental misconduct.
