Björn Bremer

Björn Bremer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Central European University (CEU). During the 2024-2025 academic year, he holds a John F. Kennedy Memorial Fellowship at Harvard University’s Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies. He previously served as a Senior Researcher in Comparative and International Political Economy at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG) in Cologne. Bremer earned his PhD in Political and Social Science from the European University Institute (2019), an MA in International Relations and Economics from Johns Hopkins University SAIS (2014), and a BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) from the University of Oxford (2012).

His research focuses on the intersection of comparative politics, international political economy, and political behavior, particularly the politics of macroeconomic policies, welfare state dynamics, and the consequences of economic crises. His book *Austerity from the Left: Social Democratic Parties in the Shadow of the Great Recession* (Oxford UP, 2023) examines why social democratic parties adopted austerity measures during the 2008 crisis. He co-led the ERC-funded *POLCON* project analyzing post-crisis political conflict across Europe, revealing feedback effects between electoral and protest politics.

His recent work explores public opinion on fiscal trade-offs, European fiscal integration, and the green transition. Key projects include *Brown to Green: The Political Economy of Risks, Voting, and Compensation Policies*, studying climate policy conflicts. His research employs mixed methods, including survey experiments and content analysis.

Bremer’s publications appear in top journals like the *British Journal of Political Science*, *European Journal of Political Research*, and *Review of International Political Economy*. He has received the John F. Kennedy Memorial Fellowship (2024–25), and his work has been cited in outlets like *Politico* and *The Guardian*.
