Björn Birnir is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), and Director of the Center for Complex and Nonlinear Science (CNLS). He specializes in nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs), mathematical seismology, fluid dynamics, and biological systems. His research focuses on turbulence, earthquake dynamics, erosion modeling, and collective behavior in biological systems like fish schools and myxobacteria swarms.
His academic roles include leading the CNLS and teaching courses in dynamical systems, partial differential equations, and computational science. He has conducted funded research on jet engine instabilities (supported by NSF and AFOSR) and developed models to predict airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in confined spaces. His work bridges theoretical mathematics with applications in engineering, earth sciences, and biology.
Notable research contributions include models for earthquake fault dynamics using stochastic PDEs, erosion patterns driven by tectonic uplift, and turbulence theory.
