Birte Vogel is a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Director at the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI) at the University of Manchester. She holds academic roles in Humanitarianism, Peace, and Conflict Studies. Her research focuses on the economic dimensions of international interventions, ethics of knowledge production, and the arts in peacebuilding. She completed her PhD at HCRI in 2014 and previously studied at the University of St Andrews and the University of Münster.
Her key projects include leading the British Academy project on ethics in conflict research (2023–2025), co-leading the AHRC-funded 'Art of Peace' project (2018–2022), and examining humanitarian cash assistance (2018–2020). She has supervised PhD students on topics ranging from cash transfers to local governance in conflict zones.
Her research interests emphasize the intersection of NGOs, civil society, and international actors, with a focus on socio-economic impacts of interventions. She contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals related to poverty reduction and peacebuilding. Vogel is active in professional bodies like the International Studies Association and co-edited books such as *Economies of Peace* (2019) and *The Companion to Peace and Conflict Fieldwork* (2021).
