Birkan Yılmaz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey, since December 2019. He serves as the MS in Software Engineering Program Coordinator and participates in key committees including Systems and Networks Committee, MS Administrative Committee, and Curriculum Committee.

Professor Yılmaz's research pioneers Molecular Communications and Nanonetworking, developing novel paradigms for nanoscale information exchange. His work spans Underwater Particle Tracking via image processing, Cognitive Radio spectrum optimization, and Active Transmitter Localization techniques. He actively explores 5G+/6G mobile networks, SDN/NFV architectures, and V2X communications with experimental validation in NetLab. Current projects address drone signal localization and molecular source tracking.
His distinguished awards include:
- Beatriu de Pinos Research Professor Fellowship (Catalan Government, 2017-2019)
- TUBITAK 2232 Research Professor Fellowship (2020-2023)
He mentors undergraduate and graduate students through the Nanonetworking Research Group (NRG), guiding research in cutting-edge communication systems. His funded projects include Bogazici University BAP-SUP 'Localizing Drone Signals' and TUBITAK 2232 'Molecular Signal Source Localization', with international collaborations spanning Spain's Polytechnic University of Catalonia and Korea's Yonsei University. He actively supports postdoctoral candidates applying for MSCA and TUBITAK fellowships.
As leader of the Nanonetworking Research Group (NRG) and core member of Computer Networks Research Laboratory (NetLab), he maintains state-of-the-art facilities for experimental validation of molecular communication systems and next-generation wireless networks, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across engineering disciplines.
