Birgitte J Vennervald is a Professor at the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. Her research is centered in the Parasitology and Aquatic Pathobiology section, with additional affiliation to Pathobiological Sciences. She maintains an active research profile with 121 documented research outputs spanning journal articles, book chapters, and conference presentations.
Her primary research interests include parasitology, immunology, anthropology of health, research capacity building, and inflammation. Her work demonstrates a strong focus on schistosomiasis and other tropical diseases, particularly examining transmission patterns, diagnostic challenges, and control interventions in endemic regions of Africa. She integrates both biomedical and anthropological approaches to understand disease in human and animal populations.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals consistent research themes across three main domains: (1) Schistosomiasis epidemiology and control programs in East Africa, with specific focus on disease hotspots and program effectiveness; (2) Diagnostic challenges of female genital schistosomiasis and co-infections in South Africa; and (3) Veterinary parasitology, particularly trematode infections in domesticated animals in Tanzania. Her work frequently employs mixed-methods approaches combining quantitative epidemiology with qualitative ethnographic research.
Professor Vennervald maintains active international collaborations, particularly with researchers in Uganda, South Africa, and Tanzania, as evidenced by her recent publications. Her work often involves WHO collaborations, as seen in the development of the Basel ultrasonography protocol for schistosomiasis assessment. She also contributes to educational initiatives, advocating for climate change education in both medical and veterinary curricula.
