Birgit Kopainsky is a Professor in System Dynamics at the Department of Geography, University of Bergen (Norway). She also serves as Director of the System Dynamics Research Group and holds lecturing roles at ETH Zurich (Switzerland) and Hamburg School of Business Administration (Germany). Her research focuses on systems thinking for sustainability transitions, resilience in socio-ecological systems, and participatory modeling approaches to address global challenges like food security and climate change.
Education: PhD in Agricultural Economics (ETH Zurich), Diploma in Geography & Environmental Studies (University of Zurich). Notable awards include the System Dynamics Society’s Outstanding Service Award (2020) and Swiss National Science Foundation fellowships.
Affiliations: Member of the System Dynamics Society (past President), Scientific Leader of Bergen Summer Research School 2025, Board member of the Millennium Institute, and advisor to projects like Food Future Switzerland and the German Science Council’s agricultural research initiatives.
Research Interests: Integrating distributive justice into sustainability models, co-producing causal maps for policy narratives, resilience of farming systems, and behavioral drivers of environmental actions. She emphasizes participatory methods and stakeholder engagement to bridge research and policy.
Grants & Leadership: Leads EU projects on sustainable agri-food systems and resilience frameworks. Co-leads the Sustainability Education Collective and chairs the System Dynamics Review journal. Her work has influenced policy reforms, including Switzerland’s nutrition recommendations.
