Bing Gong is a UB Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He began his independent academic career in 1994 after completing his postdoctoral training. His educational background includes:
- B.S. in Chemistry, Sichuan University (1984)
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, University of Chicago (1990, Advisor: David G. Lynn)
- Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Postdoctoral Fellow, University of California, Berkeley (1991-1994, Advisor: Peter G. Schultz)
Professor Gong's research pioneers bio-inspired and supramolecular chemistry, focusing on:
- Design of hollow helical aromatic oligoamides (molecular nanotubes)
- Ultrahigh-affinity molecular recognition (sub-femtomolar in organic solvents, picomolar in water)
- Enzyme-like organocatalysis with 104-fold rate enhancements
- Ion/molecular transport channels in lipid bilayers
- Nanopore sensors for biomolecule discrimination
His scientific accolades include the Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Fund Postdoctoral Fellowship. Research activities demonstrate advanced work in synthetic nanotube applications without explicit mention of current students or grants.
