Billy Fleming is an Assistant Professor in Landscape Architecture and Horticulture at Temple University's Tyler School of Art and Architecture and founding co-director of the Climate and Community Institute. He is an interdisciplinary scholar focused on climate justice and the built environment, with particular expertise in clean energy supply chains, social movements in rural landscapes, and land-based carbon management practices.
His research interests span climate policy, urban planning, environmental justice, and landscape architecture. Fleming critically examines the intersections between climate action, social justice, and spatial politics, with a focus on how communities are transformed by climate policies and energy transitions. He is particularly interested in the political economy of climate solutions and the ways in which design practices can either reinforce or challenge existing power structures.
Fleming's publication record reveals a strong focus on the Green New Deal framework, climate adaptation strategies, and critical approaches to landscape architecture. His work shows increasing emphasis on internationalist perspectives on climate policy and the need for spatially just climate transitions that center marginalized communities. He has contributed significantly to both academic discourse through peer-reviewed journals and public discourse through major media outlets.
