Bill McIlroy is a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences at the University of Waterloo. He holds a Canada Research Chair in Neurorehabilitation and leads the Neuroscience, Mobility and Balance Lab (NiMBaL). His research focuses on understanding neural mechanisms of mobility control and developing wearable technologies to improve outcomes for older adults and those with neurologic conditions. He completed his PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Guelph and a postdoctoral fellowship at Sunnybrook Research Institute.
Research interests include the neural basis of movement control, translational tools for neurorehabilitation, and remote monitoring systems. Experimental methods include EEG, EMG, and wearable sensors. Courses taught include KIN104 (Introduction to Kinesiology) and KIN416 (Neuromuscular Integration).
He previously served as Department Chair at Waterloo (2015–2022) and co-leads the Ontario Neurogenerative Disease Research Initiative (ONDRI) platforms for Remote Monitoring and Gait/Balance assessment. Collaborations involve clinical and community-based research to bridge fundamental neuroscience with practical applications.
