Bill Maurer is Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Professor of Anthropology, Law, and Criminology at the University of California, Irvine. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University (1994) and has authored/co-authored numerous books, including How Would You Like to Pay? and Money at the Margins. His research focuses on payment technologies, financial inclusion, and the sociolegal dimensions of money. Maurer directs the Institute for Money, Technology, and Financial Inclusion (IMTFI), which explores global payment systems’ impact on well-being. He has advised the U.S. Treasury on currency redesign and served on the National Academy of Sciences’ Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences.

Labs & Projects: IMTFI (since 2008), Filene Center of Excellence in Emerging Technology (2018–present). Current projects include exploring algorithmic bias in fintech and the cultural history of money.
