Bijar Ghafouri is a Professor of pain biochemistry and head of the Unit of Clinical Medicine at Linköping University. She leads the PAINOMICS laboratory, focusing on omics-based research to identify mechanistic markers of chronic pain. Her academic roles include directing third-cycle education in the Department of Health, Medicine and Caring Sciences. She holds a PhD from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (2005) and a master's from the Faculty of Science and Engineering (2001).
Her research emphasizes proteomics and clinical biomarkers in chronic pain conditions. Key areas include cytokine dynamics, salivary biomarkers, and inflammation-related mechanisms. She has co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and serves as an editor for Scientific Reports. Her work spans translational studies in fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain, and occupational health, with a focus on interdisciplinary pain management strategies.
Notable contributions include identifying IL-6 pathways in cancer pain mechanisms and investigating telomere length in chronic pain patients. She collaborates widely, mentoring PhD students like Emmanuel Bäckryd and Mika Jönsson. Her lab, PAINOMICS, integrates omics technologies to advance personalized pain therapies.
Professional activities include reviewing for major journals and leadership in clinical education. Her career trajectory reflects resilience, having overcome early displacement to become a leading academic in Sweden.
