Bieito Fernandez Castro

Dr Bieito Fernandez Castro is a Lecturer in Physical Oceanography at the University of Southampton's Ocean and Earth Science department, based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton. His research focuses on turbulent mixing, ocean dynamics, and biogeochemical cycles, with an emphasis on linking microscale physical processes to large-scale ocean circulation and carbon cycle mechanisms. Current projects include REMIX-TUNE and POLEMIX, which aim to utilize autonomous profiling floats to study vertical and horizontal mixing roles in ocean overturning and ventilation.

His work spans interdisciplinary collaborations, such as investigating ice shelf melting in Antarctica, submarine canyon turbulence, and global nitrogen fixation patterns. He actively supervises PhD students in oceanography and related fields. Key research themes include ocean circulation patterns, carbon sequestration dynamics, and the application of novel observational techniques in marine environments.
