Bi-Cheng Zhou is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Virginia. His research focuses on computational thermodynamics and kinetics of materials, including first-principles alloy theory, phase transformation mechanisms, and corrosion science. He holds a B.E. from Central South University (2010), a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University (2015), and completed postdoctoral work at Northwestern University (2017–2018). His work emphasizes lightweight alloys, high-temperature materials, and corrosion-resistant systems.
Research interests include computational modeling of alloys, phase stability analysis, and electrochemical corrosion processes. Notable contributions include advancements in cluster-based thermodynamic frameworks and oxidation-resistant ceramic coatings. He has received the NSF CAREER Award (2021) and was an invited speaker at the 2023 Gordon Research Conference on Physical Metallurgy.
Dr. Zhou teaches courses such as MSE 6230 (Thermodynamics and Phase Equilibria) and MSE 6240 (Kinetics of Transport and Transformations). His research group actively explores materials for turbine engines, environmental barrier coatings, and next-generation high-performance alloys.
Recent projects include developing heat-resistant coatings for turbine engines (UVA-led collaboration) and simulating corrosion processes in multi-principal element alloys. His lab integrates first-principles calculations with experimental validation to advance materials design for extreme environments.
