Beulah Blackmore was a pioneering academic at Cornell University's College of Human Ecology, serving as the first full-time clothing instructor in the Department of Home Economics from 1915 until her retirement in 1951. Her work emphasized the intersection of fashion, culture, and technology, expanding the curriculum to include design, psychology, chemistry, and consumer behavior. She established the Cornell Fashion + Textile Collection (CF+TC), which began as a teaching resource and grew into a globally significant archive of over 8,900 items documenting social history through clothing.
In 1936, Blackmore undertook an international tour across Cuba, the Panama Canal, Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe to study cultural dress practices, acquiring over 20 ensembles and accessories for the collection. Her legacy lies in transforming textile education and preserving cultural heritage through material culture.
Blackmore's contributions spanned research, teaching, and curation, blending practical textile knowledge with interdisciplinary insights. Her work remains foundational to the study of fashion, anthropology, and material history at Cornell.
