Dr. Betty Soliven is a Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Chicago, serving as the Associate Chair for Faculty Affairs and Director of the EMG Laboratory and Neuromuscular Program. Her clinical practice focuses on patients with myasthenia, myopathies (including myositis and dystrophies), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and autoimmune and inherited neuropathies. She is actively involved in neuromuscular clinical trials and research studies.
- Neurology Residency: University of Chicago (1985)
- EMG-Neuromuscular Fellowship: Columbia University Medical Center (1986)
- Research Fellowship in Glial Physiology: University of Chicago (1989)
Dr. Soliven's research spans both laboratory and clinical investigations in neuromuscular disorders, with particular emphasis on autoimmune neuropathies and myasthenia gravis. Her laboratory work focuses on glial biology and immune mechanisms, while her clinical research involves neuromuscular clinical trials. She has secured multiple NIH grants as Principal Investigator for research on animal models of autoimmune neuropathy and therapeutic targets in inflammatory neuropathies.
Analysis of Dr. Soliven's recent publications (2019-2024) reveals a strong focus on myasthenia gravis, with significant work on diagnostic approaches, treatment strategies, and understanding the immunological basis of the disease. Her work increasingly incorporates novel technologies such as digital tools and artificial intelligence for assessment. She also maintains research interests in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis biomarkers, diabetic neuropathy outcomes, and transthyretin amyloidosis.
- Chair, Medical Advisory Board of Conquer MG
Dr. Soliven has served as Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded research projects, including R01 and R21 grants from NINDS. She has collaborated extensively with colleagues at the University of Chicago and beyond, with frequent co-authors including Kourosh Rezania and Naoum Issa. Her work has been published in high-impact journals including Neurology, Journal of Clinical Medicine, and Muscle & Nerve.
As Director of the EMG Laboratory and Neuromuscular Program, Dr. Soliven oversees comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for patients with neuromuscular disorders. Her program conducts clinical trials and maintains active research collaborations with basic science laboratories studying the underlying mechanisms of neuromuscular diseases.
