Betty-Shannon Prevatt is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Meredith College, affiliated with the School of Education, Health and Human Sciences. She is also a Licensed Psychological Associate in North Carolina. Her research focuses on maternal mental health interventions, particularly for marginalized populations, and she co-leads the NIMH-funded Advancing Insight into Maternal Social Support (AIMSS) study. She holds a Ph.D. from NC State University (2018) and an MA from East Carolina University (2001), alongside a BA from Meredith College (1999).
Dr. Prevatt’s career bridges clinical practice and academia. She previously maintained a private practice specializing in reproductive mental health and infertility counseling. Her teaching passion was ignited during her tenure as an adjunct professor at Meredith, prompting her to pursue a Ph.D. Her research has been highlighted by NPR and Vogue, emphasizing evidence-based solutions for maternal mental health challenges. She has received multiple awards, including Meredith College’s Pauline Davis Perry Award and Ida H. Friday Faculty Award.
Her work addresses systemic barriers to mental health care for mothers, with a focus on social support structures and stigma reduction. Grants include funding from NIMH and Meredith College’s Faculty Development Committee. She actively advocates for diversity in psychology curricula and integrates community-based research into her academic contributions.
