Research Interests
Dr. Lai’s theory-guided research centers on three primary themes:
- Understanding how community resources and individual factors help youth prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters.
- Examining the pathways linking disaster exposure to psychological distress (PTSD, depression, anxiety), health behaviors (physical activity, diet), and biological health outcomes (blood pressure, cardiovascular risk).
- Translating findings into policy and practice through schools, evidence-based interventions, and advanced statistical modeling.
Recent Research Trends
Across her 2023-2025 publications, Dr. Lai has focused on integrating large public datasets to model post-disaster trajectories, evaluating innovative science-communication strategies, and co-designing community-school partnerships that bolster youth well-being after environmental jolts such as hurricanes and COVID-19.
