Professor Bettina Varwig holds the position of Professor of Music History at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Music and is a Fellow of Emmanuel College. She previously served as Senior Lecturer at King's College London and held postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard University and Magdalen College, Oxford. Her research focuses on early modern European musical cultures, the history of the body and emotions, and interdisciplinary connections between music and science.
Her major works include Music in the Flesh: An Early Modern Musical Physiology (2023), which earned the Otto Kinkeldey Award, and Histories of Heinrich Schütz (2011). She edits key journals like Eighteenth-Century Music and collaborates with performers to bridge historical research and contemporary performance practices.
