Bettina Beinhoff is an Associate Professor of Sociolinguistics at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), where she serves as Course Leader for the MA Intercultural Communication program. She holds affiliations with the Anglia Ruskin Research Centre for Intercultural and Multilingual Studies (ARRCIMS) and the Centre for Science Fiction and Fantasy (CSFF). Her academic background includes a PhD in Applied Linguistics and an MPhil from the University of Cambridge, alongside a PGCert in Teaching at Higher Education Level.
Her research focuses on language ideologies, sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, and constructed languages (e.g., Esperanto, Na'vi). She explores topics like language identity, cross-cultural communication, and the social implications of non-native speech accents. Recent work includes studies on fictional languages' design and perception, and her 2025 article on extra-planetary communication reached top 10 on SSRN.
Bettina advises startups like Algodynamix and contributed to the Interstellar Foundation's lunar message project launched in January 2025. She actively presents at conferences such as the Linguistic Association of Great Britain and the International Conference on Constructed Languages. Her editorial roles include membership in BAAL and the Higher Education Academy.
Her grants include a British Academy-funded project on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Supervision focuses on migrant communities' language maintenance, identity in SLA, and accent-related social perceptions.
