Betsy Thom is a Professor in the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education at Middlesex University, affiliated with the Department of Mental Health & Social Work. She co-directs the Drug and Alcohol Research Centre.
Her research examines drug and alcohol policy, substance use in marginalized groups (young people, BAME communities, older adults), and mental health-substance use intersections. She leads projects funded by NIHR and European commissions focusing on prevention, treatment, and policy evaluation.
She teaches research methods and supervises doctoral students. As editor-in-chief for Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy for over 20 years, she has shaped scholarly discourse. She coordinates the UK chapter of the International Society of Substance Use Professionals.
