Bethany Caruso is an Assistant Professor in the Hubert Department of Global Health at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health. She holds joint appointments in the Gangarosa Department of Environmental Health and the Behavioral, Social, and Health Education Sciences Department. Her work focuses on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in low- and middle-income countries, emphasizing how these factors impact women’s health, empowerment, and mental well-being across life stages. She employs mixed-methods approaches, including qualitative research and behavioral intervention design.
Education: BA from Wesleyan University; MPH and PhD from Emory University. Key research areas include menstrual health, child feces management, and the intersection of sanitation with gender equity. She has led fieldwork in Bolivia, India, Kenya, the Philippines, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Uganda, with additional support in over a dozen countries.
Her recent work explores behavioral drivers of hygiene practices, the role of WASH in mental health, and policy translation for public health impact. Affiliations include the Center for Global Safe WASH and the Global Health and Development PhD program.
