Bethany B. Moore is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Michigan Medical School, with a joint appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine. She holds the prestigious Galen B. Toews, M.D. Collegiate Professorship. Her research focuses on lung fibrosis pathogenesis, immune responses to infections (including herpesviruses, influenza, and coronaviruses), and post-stem cell transplant immunity. Her laboratory investigates bacterial pathogens like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and MRSA in the context of diabetes and viral-bacterial co-infections.
Key achievements include NIH R01 funding for microbiome studies, Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation grants, and mentoring over 15 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Notable awards include the Parker B. Francis Fellowship and K99R00 Award for lab members. The lab has published extensively in journals like Journal of Immunology, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and PLoS Pathogens.
- Research Highlights: Mechanisms of fibrosis, host-microbe interactions, and translational studies in lung diseases
- Lab Leadership: Managed transitions to new lab spaces in 2020, maintained operations during the 2020 pandemic shutdown
- Grants & Funding: Secured multi-million dollar grants supporting research on viral-bacterial co-infections and post-transplant immunity
Her team has produced impactful work on biomarkers for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and discovered critical roles for CCR2, TLR9, and XIAP in immune regulation. The lab maintains a BSL3/ABSL3 facility for high-containment pathogen research.
