Bethany Altschwager, DAT, ATR-BC, ATCS, LCAT, LPAT, is an academic in the Department of Art Therapy and Counseling at West Liberty University’s College of Liberal and Creative Arts. She began her career in 2007 teaching photography, graphic design, and studio art before transitioning to art therapy, where her focus shifted to facilitating emotional expression through creative processes.
- Teaching courses: ATC 506 Assessments in Art Therapy, ATC 501 History & Development of Art Therapy
- Academic programs: Major in Creative Arts Therapy, Minor in Art Therapy, 18-credit program, 3+2 Bridge MA in Art Therapy & Counseling
Her research interests align with the integration of technology in art therapy and its application to chemical and process addictions. She has contributed to graduate education advancements via a $25,000 grant and participated in initiatives like the Towngate Creative Arts Therapy Exhibition (2023) and mask-making workshops for emotional expression.
She earned her master’s degree from the School of Visual Arts, focusing on addiction studies and technological tools in therapeutic settings. As a faculty member, she oversees programs such as the Graduate Certificate in Art Therapy and supports student projects via the CAT Club and Graduate Practicum/Internship Scholarships.
