Dr. Beth Williams is Lecturer in Microbiology at the University of East Anglia School of Biological Sciences, specializing in environmental microbiology and microbial sulfur cycling. Research investigates bacterial transformations of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) in marine and saltmarsh ecosystems.
Holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Microbiology and conducts research on microbial metabolic pathways involved in sulfur biogeochemistry. Current NERC-funded project 'DiMethylSulfonioPropionate cycling In Terrestrial environments' examines previously overlooked terrestrial DMSP production.
Research combines molecular biology, isotope geochemistry, and 'omics approaches to characterize DMSP synthesis pathways across diverse microorganisms. Recent publications elucidate enzymatic mechanisms of DMSP production (DsyB/DSYB enzymes) and quantify bacterial contributions to marine sulfur cycles. Fieldwork includes coastal sediment sampling and marine microbial community analysis.
Teaching focuses on environmental microbiology and molecular biology techniques. Laboratory activities include microbial cultivation, enzymatic assays, and stable isotope probing methodologies.
