Beth S. Wenger is the Moritz and Josephine Berg Professor of History and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences. She holds leadership roles in Jewish Studies programs and serves on academic councils for institutions like the Center for Jewish History and the American Jewish Historical Society. Her research focuses on American and European Jewish history, gender studies, and religious identity formation.
Wenger earned her B.A. from Wesleyan University and advanced degrees from Columbia University, Jewish Theological Seminary, and Yale University. She has held administrative roles including History Department Chair (2012-2019) and Jewish Studies Program Director (2005-2013).
Her research explores intersections between Jewish heritage and American national identity, including studies of Holocaust memory, Zionism, and urban Jewish culture. Notable works include History Lessons (Princeton, 2012) and The Jewish Americans (2007), which accompanied a PBS documentary. She has curated museum exhibitions and advised on historical films.
Recipient of the Lee Max Friedman Medal (2022), Salo Baron Prize (1996), and teaching awards, Wenger also holds fellowships at institutions like Princeton's Center for American Religion and Yale's Institute for Advanced Study in Religion. She advises the Katz Center for Judaic Studies and serves on editorial boards for Jewish Quarterly Review and American Jewish History.
