Beth Russell is a Professor in the Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) department at the University of Connecticut, serving as Director of the Center for Applied Research in Human Development (CARHD), co-Director of the Collaboratory on School and Child Health (CSCH), and Associate Department Head for Graduate Studies. Her expertise centers on self-regulation in normative and at-risk populations, with a focus on mindfulness interventions for high-risk groups (e.g., early childhood, adolescents, young adults), substance use recovery, and family coping mechanisms during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. She actively mentors graduate students in research areas including health and well-being, parenthood dynamics, and prevention strategies.
Her research integrates community-engaged scholarship to address systemic challenges in education and healthcare. Recent work examines stress spillover between parents and children during crises, disciplinary disparities in K-12 education, and long-term family resilience in adversity. She leads initiatives to improve caregiver support systems for families affected by substance use disorders and chronic health conditions.
Dr. Russell’s publications analyze pandemic-related mental health trends, stress measurement frameworks, and intervention efficacy in high-stress populations. She currently oversees multiple federally funded projects and collaborates with schools and community organizations to translate research into actionable policies.
