Beth McGinnis serves as Associate Professor of Musicology in the Division of Music within Samford University's School of the Arts, where she received the 2021-2022 Buchanan Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching. She concurrently holds roles as Organist at Vestavia Hills Baptist Church and certified yoga instructor, while developing community partnerships with Alabama-based organizations including the Perry County school bands, Mt. Gilead Scholastic and Artistic Institute, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, and Alabama School for the Blind.
Her academic credentials comprise:
- PhD in Musicology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2003)
- MA in Musicology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1999)
- MM from Texas Christian University (1995)
- BM in Piano Performance from Samford University (1991)
Dr. McGinnis's research centers on American musical traditions, particularly Alabama's cultural landscape, explored through her podcast "Hear in Alabama". Her scholarly output examines intersections between music and extra-musical contexts, including biographical contributions to the New Grove Dictionary of American Music. This work bridges academic rigor with community-based music education initiatives across diverse Alabama institutions.
Her performance career as an accompanist spans prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Santo Spirito in Florence, Vienna Konzerthaus, Palais Ferstel, and Birmingham's Alys Stephens Center. She resides with her husband Scott McGinnis (faculty in Samford's Department of Biblical and Religious Studies) and their children William and Kate, pursuing national park exploration as a family.
