Beth E. Wilson is a Lecturer in Art History at SUNY New Paltz, co-chair of the Film and Video Studies minor. She holds an M.A. from Hunter College and an M.Phil. from CUNY Graduate Center. Her research focuses on the intersection of Surrealism with documentary photography/film, particularly during the interwar period, examining artists like Lee Miller and Luis Buñuel. She teaches courses on photography history, film studies, and early 20th-century movements, integrating anti-racist/anti-colonial frameworks into her pedagogy. Wilson has curated notable exhibitions including the 2007 Kingston Sculpture Biennial and contributed to the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art. Her publications include analyses of Margaret Bourke-White’s work in LIFE Magazine during WWII and Monet’s engagement with photography. Professional affiliations include the International Art Critics Association (AICA) and the International Society for the Study of Surrealism.
Her teaching emphasizes critical engagement with historical narratives and their contemporary relevance. Recent scholarly work explores how documentary practices intersected with surrealist aesthetics, challenging traditional boundaries between artistic and political discourse. She has presented at international conferences and published critiques in venues across North America and beyond.
