Beth Bailey

Beth Bailey is a Foundation Distinguished Professor in the Department of History at the University of Kansas, where she also serves as Director of the Center for Military, War, and Society Studies. She holds a Ph.D. (1986) and M.A. (1982) from the University of Chicago, and B.A./B.S. (1984) from Northwestern University.

Her research examines the intersection of military institutions and societal change, with particular focus on the U.S. Army's management of racial justice issues during the Vietnam War era. Additional research domains include the history of gender and sexuality in modern America.

Publications include award-winning books such as America's Army: Making the All-Volunteer Force and Sex in the Heartland, along with edited volumes on Pearl Harbor and the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Honors:

• Andrew Carnegie Fellow (2021)
• Elected to Society of American Historians (2017)

She has presented research globally and received support from NEH, Woodrow Wilson Center, and ACLS. Currently not accepting new graduate students for advising.
