Bess B. Ward is the William J. Sinclair Professor of Geosciences and a core faculty member of the High Meadows Environmental Institute (HMEI) at Princeton University. Her research focuses on biogeochemical processes in marine ecosystems, particularly nitrogen cycling in ocean oxygen minimum zones and estuaries. She leads the Ward Research Laboratory, which integrates molecular biology, isotope geochemistry, and field studies to explore microbial roles in global nitrogen dynamics.
Her work spans geochemistry, biological oceanography, and microbiology, with field projects in the Arabian Sea, Eastern Tropical Pacific, Chesapeake Bay, and salt marsh systems. Recent studies include discoveries of novel nitrogen transformation pathways, such as photochemical N2O production and urea-driven nitrite formation. Ward has advised numerous graduate students, including J. Catherine Hexter, Naomi Intrator, and Moriah A. Kunes, whose research contributes to understanding nitrogen loss mechanisms and marine ecosystem responses to climate change.
She organized the 8th International Conference on Nitrification (ICoN8), fostering global collaboration in nitrogen cycle research. Her lab develops innovative methods for measuring nitrogen transformation rates and has advanced understanding of microbial community adaptations to low-oxygen environments. Ward’s contributions bridge basic science with environmental policy, addressing challenges like eutrophication and greenhouse gas emissions.
