Dr. Bertrand Lussier is a Full Professor at the Université de Montréal's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, specializing in small animal surgery and orthopedics. He holds a position in the Department of Clinical Sciences and has been affiliated with the university since 1999. His expertise includes experimental surgery, minimally invasive techniques, osteoarthritis research, and the development of animal models adhering to the 3R principles (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement). Dr. Lussier has received multiple awards for teaching excellence and research, including the Carl J Norden Pfizer Award for Clinical Research in 2011 and eight Best Teacher awards from veterinary students.
Education: DVM (1986), M.Sc. in Clinical Sciences (1993), and residency in small animal surgery at Cornell University (1994). He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. His research focuses on surgical models for osteoarthritis, ligament repair, and translational medicine. He has supervised numerous graduate students and led projects funded by organizations like the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and industry partners. Affiliations include the CRCHUM research center and Quebec's Animal Pharmacology Research Group (GREPAQ).
Research interests span experimental surgical techniques, osteoarthritis pathophysiology, and animal welfare. His publications address topics like 3D kinematic analysis, biomaterials for joint repair, and pain management in companion animals. He actively collaborates on projects involving 3D-printed prosthetics and therapeutic diet studies for canine/feline osteoarthritis.
