Bert Lott is a Teaching Professor of Classics at the University of Notre Dame, previously holding the Matthew Vassar, Jr. Professorship at Vassar College. He earned his Ph.D. in Ancient History from the University of Pennsylvania (1995). His research focuses on Roman political, social, and religious transformations during the Republic to Empire transition, with particular emphasis on ritual process, media studies, necropolitics, and political geography.
Educational Background: Ph.D. in Ancient History (University of Pennsylvania, 1995); B.A. in History and Classical Studies (Washington University in St. Louis, 1989).
Research Interests
Dr. Lott's work analyzes how ritual practices and media shaped political authority in ancient Rome. He explores necropolitical dynamics and spatial politics, particularly in Augustan Rome. Key themes include the role of ritual competence in gendered power dynamics and the material culture of memory.
Recent Scholarship
His publications address Augustan calendars, imperial cults, and urban topography. Recent work focuses on the Fasti Praenestini inscriptions and Augustan religious reforms, reflecting interdisciplinary approaches to textual and archaeological evidence.
