Bernhard Weßels

Bernhard Weßels (born 1955) is a Professor of Political Science at Humboldt University of Berlin and Senior Research Fellow at the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB), where he serves as Deputy Director of the 'Democracy and Democratization' research unit. His academic career spans over three decades with significant leadership roles including Acting Director of the Democracy research unit (2020-2022) and Deputy Director since 2003.

His research focuses on democracy studies, comparative political behavior, election research, interest mediation, political representation, and comparative politics. Weßels has made substantial contributions to understanding German electoral behavior through longitudinal studies and comparative analysis of political systems.
