Bernd Nowack

Prof. Dr. Bernd Nowack is a group leader at the Environmental Risk Assessment and Management (ERAM) Group within the Technology & Society Laboratory at Empa - Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology in St. Gallen, Switzerland. He has been in this role since 2007 and is also an Adjunct Professor at ETH Zurich's Department of Environmental Systems Science since 2013. His research focuses on modeling flows of nanomaterials and microplastics in the environment, hazard assessment, life cycle analysis, and ecotoxicology.

• M.Sc. in Environmental Science from ETH Zurich (1992)

His work integrates experimental research on nanomaterial release from products, microplastic emissions from textiles, and risk assessment frameworks. He contributes to projects like GoNanoBiomat, GRACIOUS, and caLIBRAte, addressing environmental impacts of nanotechnology and plastic pollution. At ETH Zurich, he teaches courses such as Nanomaterials in the Environment and Gesellschaftlicher Umgang mit aktuellen Umweltrisiken (Societal Handling of Environmental Risks).

Additional professional engagements include habilitation in Environmental Chemistry at ETH Zurich (2003) and research collaborations at institutions like Eawag, Johns Hopkins University, and Université de Limoges.
