Bernd Lepenies

Professor Bernd Lepenies holds the Chair of Biochemistry and Chemistry at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Sciences. His research program focuses on immunopathogenesis and receptor biochemistry in veterinary contexts.

Primary research areas include:

• C-type lectin receptor signaling in immune responses
• Mechanisms of neurodegeneration from viral infections
• Parasitic disease pathogenesis (malaria, helminths)
• Bacterial recognition systems
• Veterinary immunology of bovine systems

He directs multiple grant-funded projects, including an ongoing study on bovine monocyte polarization and completed work on:

• Neurotropic virus-induced immunopathology
• C-type lectin receptors in cerebral malaria
• MINCLE receptor functions in worm infections
• CLEC12A receptor roles in Legionella recognition

Previously, he co-led a Collaborative Research Center project characterizing multivalent carbohydrate-receptor interactions through glycoligand synthesis.
