Bernardo Batiz-Lazo is Professor of FinTech History and Global Trade at Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University, with additional affiliation at the School of Economics and Business, Universidad Anáhuac México. His research bridges historical analysis with contemporary financial technology developments, focusing on the evolution of payment systems and retail banking across different historical periods and geographical contexts.
Dr. Batiz-Lazo's primary research interests encompass the business and economic history of Latin America (particularly Mexico) and Spain, the impact of computer technology on retail banking, and contemporary issues surrounding cashless economies, retail payments, and financial inclusion. His work examines how historical technological transitions in banking inform our understanding of current digital transformations, with increasing attention to gender disparities, financial inclusion, and cross-border payment systems in developing economies.
His publication record reveals a consistent trajectory from historical studies of banking technology (ATMs, credit cards) toward contemporary FinTech issues, demonstrating how past innovations shape current financial ecosystems. Recent work shows heightened focus on financial inclusion in Africa and Latin America, gender dimensions in banking history, and the sociotechnical aspects of payment systems.
Scientific Honors:
