Bernard Wood is a University Professor of Human Origins and CASHP Core Faculty, renowned for his contributions to paleoanthropology. He holds a D.Sc., Ph.D., M.B.B.S., and B.Sc. from The University of London. His research focuses on hominin systematics, phylogeny reconstruction, dental evolution, and the evolutionary dynamics of the hominin clade.
Key research interests include the taxonomic classification of fossils such as Sahelanthropus and Paranthropus, the role of homoplasy in evolution, and comparative muscle morphology across primates. He has pioneered studies on mandibular premolar molarization and collaborated extensively on primate musculature and phylogenetic analysis.
Wood has authored seminal works like the Wiley-Blackwell Encyclopedia of Human Evolution and contributed to debates on hominin diversity and the interpretation of the fossil record. His awards include the Oscar and Shoshana Trachtenberg Prize (2003) and the 175th Anniversary Medal (2015).
He advises multiple graduate students and collaborates globally, emphasizing critical evaluation of conventional paleoanthropological narratives. His work bridges anatomy, genetics, and ecology to address fundamental questions about human origins and evolution.
