Dr. Bernard Camilleri is a Senior Lecturer in the Division of Language and Communication Science at City St George's, University of London, within the School of Health Sciences. He joined City University London in 2005 as a lecturer and has since played a pivotal role in teaching, research, and administration. He serves as Programme Director for the PGDip/MSc in Speech and Language Therapy and is the Director of the Compass Centre, the in-house teaching and research clinic. His academic journey includes a BSc (Hons) in Communication Therapy from the University of Malta (1995), an MSc in Human Communication (2000), and a PhD in Language and Communication Science (2009), all from City, University of London.
His research centers on dynamic assessment of children's language, early identification of communication disorders, and developmental speech and language impairments. He has a special interest in bilingual children and infants at risk, aiming to improve early detection and intervention. His work bridges clinical practice and academic research, with strong emphasis on psychometrics and assessment validity.
The most recent articles reflect a consistent focus on dynamic assessment methodologies, particularly for infants and bilingual children. These studies explore tools for receptive vocabulary, word learning, joint attention, and motor imitation, demonstrating strong reliability and potential for clinical use. His work has been supported through institutional roles and conference presentations, including a keynote at the NAPLIC Conference in 2011. He is an active member of the Health and Care Professions Council and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
He leads and participates in several research groups, including the Developmental Assessment & Intervention Research (DAIR), Speech, Phonology & Linguistics, and Gesture, Deafness & Sign groups, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration in child language research.
