Associate Professor Bernadine Murray serves as Head of School for the Creative Industries within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Chester. She joined the university in 2007 after establishing a career in both academic and creative industry roles spanning graphic design, multimedia development, and community arts.
Her educational background includes:
- MProf from University of Chester (2012-2023)
- MA Interactive Multimedia from Staffordshire University
- PGCert FE and HE from University of Bolton
- PGCert Community Arts from Manchester Metropolitan University
- BA Hons Fine Art from Stourbridge School of Art
Murray's research focuses on meditative drawing practices and their relationship to internal and external narratives, exploring embodiment, impermanence, liminal spaces, and metacognition. Her creative practice investigates the tension between internal and external narratives and landscapes. Additional research examines art and design pedagogy, particularly the role of social media in art education, barriers to creativity, and the development of creative resilience through meditative drawing practices. She also investigates user-centered design and human-computer interaction.
Her publications reflect international perspectives on design education, with her 2013 article in the International Journal of Art & Design Education examining cross-cultural educational practices and curriculum development in art education.
Murray has held significant leadership positions including Head of Department (2018-2024), Deputy Head of Department (2015-2018), and Programme Leader (2008-2015). She has developed numerous courses including 'Working in the Creative and Cultural Industries' (2024), 'Methods, Materials and Possibilities' (2023), and the BA (Hons) Graphic Design program (2007).
Her professional activities include committee memberships with Place for the Arts in Chester Board, Chester Contemporary Steering Group, Fashion Academics Creating Equality [FACE], and various university committees including Promotions Committee and Student Voice and Experience Committee.
