Associate Professor Bernadette Ward holds a position at Monash University's School of Rural Health, with an adjunct role at the Burnet Institute. Her research focuses on alcohol and other drugs, healthcare access equity, rural health, and research capacity building. She has secured over $2M in grants and authored over 80 publications. Ward is actively involved in teaching medical students and coordinates the Scholarly Intensive Placement program. She currently supervises three PhD candidates and has supported numerous early-career researchers.
Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to good health and well-being (SDG 3) and reduced inequalities (SDG 10). Key achievements include leading NHMRC-funded studies on methamphetamine use and parental support, and co-developing policies impacting education and healthcare sectors. Ward’s awards include the 2017 AFP Journal Award and 2024 Dean’s Excellence Award for Industry Education Programs.
Research collaborations span institutions like the Burnet Institute and Monash Health, addressing drug-related harms, mental health, and rural healthcare equity. She advocates for policy changes through government committees and media engagements, emphasizing evidence-based practices in both research and education.
