Berihun Gebeye is a Lecturer in Law at the Faculty of Laws, University College London (UCL), specializing in constitutional law, public law, and international law. His research focuses on African constitutionalism, legal pluralism, and the intersection of legal traditions in postcolonial contexts. He holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Constitutional Law from Central European University and advanced degrees from Haramaya University, Addis Ababa University, and Central European University. His seminal work A Theory of African Constitutionalism (Oxford UP, 2021) redefines constitutional studies through the lens of 'legal syncretism.'
Dr. Gebeye’s academic career includes roles as a Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow at the Max Planck Institute, Visiting Professor at Central European University and the University of Yangon, and Global Teaching Fellow. He currently serves as Book Review Editor for Constitutional Studies, Editor of the German Law Journal, and Advisory Board member for Constituições. His research spans federalism, human rights, and the role of customary law in modern legal systems.
Notable awards include the 2023 ICON•S Book Prize Honorable Mention. His publications address constitutional crises, pandemic governance, and transformative legal frameworks in Africa. Active in international legal discourse, he contributes to debates on decolonizing constitutional thought and promoting sustainable constitutional designs.
