Dr. Berber Hagedoorn is an Assistant Professor in Media Studies & Audiovisual Culture at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Arts. Her research focuses on screen cultures, crossmedia storytelling, and audiovisual cultural memory in Europe. She examines how television's integration with new media technologies has transformed its role as a storyteller and 'history teacher' for modern audiences. Hagedoorn co-edited the 2022 volume New Challenges in European Television Series and contributed to special issues on 'Youthification of Television' in Critical Studies in Television (2021).
Her work utilizes digital humanities methods with platforms like Europeana, EUscreen, and CLARIAH. She received the 2021 CLARIAH Teaching Fellowship for multimodal storytelling projects and the 2018 Europeana Research Grant for analyzing WWI-related digital heritage. Hagedoorn actively collaborates with institutions such as the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision and serves on the EUscreen Foundation Board (Research Representative) and ECREA's Television Studies section (Vice-Chair, 2016-2022).
Key publications include analyses of transmedia storytelling in archival practices, digital platform user engagement, and institutional frameworks for audiovisual preservation. She also investigates gender dynamics in German historical miniseries and the impact of 'post-truth' dynamics on media interpretation.
