Bentuo Zheng is a Professor and Graduate Director in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Memphis. He holds the Dunavant Professorship (2018) and has received numerous awards including the Alumni Association Award for Distinguished Research (2021). His research focuses on Functional Analysis, particularly Banach space theory, operator theory, and geometric properties of Banach spaces.
Education: PhD in Mathematics from Texas A&M University (2007), MS and BS from Peking University (2002, 1999).
Research Interests: Functional analysis with emphasis on approximation properties, Banach space geometry, Lipschitz operators, and asymptotic structures. His work bridges pure functional analysis with applications in operator ideals and nonlinear geometry.
Grants: Lead investigator on NSF grants totaling $258,675, including studies on Banach space geometry and machine learning applications. Received Simons Foundation support (2018-2023).
Service: Serves as Graduate Director, chairs curriculum development committees, and organizes AMS special sessions. Active on university committees including graduate recruitment and faculty hiring.
Advising: Mentored over 20 graduate students and postdocs, with recent advisees including Tapesh Yadav (PhD 2023) and Monika Yadav (PhD 2022). Current students focus on advanced topics in functional analysis and operator theory.
