Benoît FRENAY is an associate professor at the Faculty of Computer Science, Université de Namur. He holds a 2013 PhD in Engineering Sciences from the UCL Machine Learning Group and a 2010 Master's degree in university pedagogy from Université catholique de Louvain. His research focuses on machine learning, particularly robust learning under label noise, efficient algorithms for big data, and probabilistic methods including classification, clustering, and feature selection.
- Education: Civil engineer in computer science (2007), PhD in Machine Learning (2013)
- Research stays: Aalto University, Radboud University Nijmegen, Bielefeld University (CITEC)
His work bridges machine learning with biomedical applications, notably ECG signal segmentation using hidden Markov models and wavelet transforms. He has developed methods for transition modeling and noise-robust inference in HMMs. He received the Scientific Prize IBM Belgium for Informatics (2014) for his PhD thesis on Uncertainty and Label Noise in Machine Learning.
Collaborations include biomedical data analysis (ECGs) and geographic data clustering. Current affiliations encompass the UNamur Institute for Research in Didactics and Education (IRDENa) and the Namur Digital Institute (NADI). He serves as a Faculty Council representative and President of the Faculty Council.
